The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours green, cream, copper, black, brown and blue.
Inscriptions read
'Life is short
Death is sure
Sins the cuase
Christs the cure.',
'Keep
the Sabbath
Holy'
and
'Thy world is everlasting truth.
How pure is everypage.
That holy book shall guide our youth
And well support our age'.
Many family initials listed.
Signed and dated,
'Sewed. By. Rossalinda. Anderson. 1848. Aged. 12. At. I. Braes. School.'
A fantastic set of motifs, including a finely embroidered sailing ship/boat.
Also, an owl,
dogs,
birds,
potted flowering plants,
rabbits,
fruit baskets,
deer,
hearts,
stags
and peacocks.
Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is stitched to linen.
Frame backed with wood and brown paper.
CONDITION: Good. No holes.
No stains.
Some minor stitch losses to the motifs.
Colours are good and strong.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear.
Gilt slip in bottom left corner has a gap.
