
William IV, dated 1838. 17.7ins high, 18.1ins wide, 0.8ins deep. 1838 Boy with Dog Sampler by Sarah Chapman.
The sampler is worked in silk and fine wool on a canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours greens, black, cream and browns.
Verse reads
'The Lord support my infant days
And guide my giddy Youth
Holy and just are all thy ways
And all thy works are truth'.
Signed and dated,
'Sarah Chapman Her Work Aged 12 Years Finished 1835'.
A wonderful picture of a boy with his dog in the centre.
Surrounding motifs including flower baskets,
birds,
flowers
and fir trees.
Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to wood.
Frame backed with brown paper.
CONDITION: Good.
One hole, and a couple of pulls to the ground.
Two pale patchy stains.
Stitch losses and a couple of loose threads to the motifs,
border
and signature.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
