Antique Sampler, 1814, By Phoebe Shorten Aged 7

George IV, dated 1814. 15.7ins high, 10.6ins wide, 1.2ins deep. 1814 Sampler by Phoebe Shorten.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, pale blue, copper, gold, pink, cream and black.

Lovely verse,

'Oh dearest Mother, down thy cheek

Why strays that precious tear?

Inspired by fond maternal love,

say, does the gem appear.

For still implanted in my heart.

Shall be that precious tear:

And by thy sweet example taugth,

I'll live:-my Mother dear:-'.

Signed and dated,

'Phoebe Shorten Aged 7 Years 1814'.

A good set of motifs, including fruit trees,

potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets,

birds

and peacocks.

Framed in an old, possibly original gilt over wood, frame with rippled, old glass.

Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wooden board. Frame backed with brown paper.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

One slight stain bottom right

and slight darkening to the top.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing wear, but structurally sound and could be hung as-is.
