The sampler is worked in fine wool and cotton on a canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours greens, cream, red, black, light brown and purple.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-10, and family initials.
Signed 'Ann Brown Aged 10 Kilmarnk. Placename Kilmarnock is a town in Scotland.
A few motifs including a flowering tree,
thistles,
peacocks
and birds.
Framed in an old, black, ebonised wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with wood.
CONDITION: Good. No holes.
Uniform age-darkening of the ground.
Some stitch losses to the border, motifs
and letters/numbers.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
No colour run.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound.
