The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours black, blue, green, brown and white.
Verse reads,
'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand
As the first effort of an infant hand
And while her fingers on the canvas move
Engage her tender heart to seek thy love
With thy dear children Let her have a part
And write thy name thyself upon her heart'.
Signed and dated, 'Jane - Bennett Rugby - 1832'. Placename Rugby is a town in England.
A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, potted flowering plants, blossoming trees, butterflies and a bird.
Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked onto a wooden stretcher frame with card backing. Frame backed with wood.
CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.
A few patchy stains.
No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
