Antique Commemorative Sampler, 1793, by Elizabeth Holden

George III, dated 1793. 13ins high by 12.75ins wide. 1793 'Long Live the King and Queen' Commemorative Sampler by Elizabeth Holden.

The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours red, cream, green, pale blue, copper, white, pink, brown and gold.

Verse reads

'Long may the King Great Britions Scepter fway

While all his Subjects peaceably obey

And when Gods Providence fhall him remove

From thefe below to higheft Realms above

To his own Race may he the Crown refign

Forever to continue in that Line'.

Inscription reads

'Long Live the King and Queen 1793'.

Signed and dated

'Elisabeth Holden Her Work 1793'.

The sampler is possibly commemorative of the war against revolutionary and Napoleonic France.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including angels,

flowers,

fir trees,

fruit baskets,

birds,

butterflies and lions.

Framed in an old gilt frame with glass. Stitched to linen with chipboard backing.

CONDITION: Good.

A few holes, and losses to the outer edges.

A few pale stain specks.

Some stitch losses to the verse, divider lines and border.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame repainted, tidy and structurally sound.
