Antique House Sampler, 1828, by Jane Smith

George IV, dated 1828. 20.5ins high by 20.25ins wide. 1828 House Sampler by Jane Smith.

Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass.

Fixed to board with wood and brown paper backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours gold, cream, blue, light brown, greens and black.

Verse reads,

'Death comes unheard and takes a way

Unseen his darts are sudden his arrows

near he knocks as boldy at the palace door

As if it were the meanest cottage of the poor'.

Signed and dated,

'Jane Smith Aged 10 1828'.

A fabulous set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a wonderful, large manor house,

a young girl,

lions,

a dog,

birds,

flowers,

potted flowering plants,

trees, laden with fruit,

stags,

fir trees,

a lady and a gentleman

and a peacock.

CONDITION: Good.

A couple of small holes.

A few stain specks.

Minor stitch losses to the house motif.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
