
William IV, dated 1832. 15.5ins by 12.5ins wide. 1832 Sampler by Rachel Goster. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.
Fixed to card, with card backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours green, cream, copper, gold, blue and pink.
Verse reads,
'Give first to God the the flower of the youth
Take for thy guide the Holy Word of Truth
Adorn thy soul with grace prize wisdom more
Than all the pearls upon the Indian shore'.
Signed and dated,
'Rachel Goster Finished this April 14 1832 Aged 8 Years'.
A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants,
stars,
fir trees,
cross,
crowns,
hearts,
fruit baskets
and butterflies.
CONDITION: Good.
A few small holes to outer edges.
A few patchy stains to outer edges.
Minor stitch losses to the signature,
motifs
and verse.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
The silks bright and glossy.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
