Antique Scottish Sampler, 1812, by July Orr

George III, dated 1812?. 18ins. By13.25ins wide. Antique 1812 House Sampler by July Orr. 1812 Scottish House Sampler by July Orr. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted (Couch-stitched) onto calico over acid-free mountboard. Sealed with acid-free backboard and tape.

The sampler is worked in silk on a very fine ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, red, light brown, gold, dark brown and blue.

Verses read

'GIVE HER OF THE FRUIT OF HER

HANDS AND LET HER OWN WORKS

PRAISE HER IN THE GATES'

and

'THIS IS TO LET YOU SEE WHAT CARE MY

PARENTS TOOK OF ME'.

Signed and dated

'JULY ORR AGED 12 YEAR 1812'.

A wonderful set of motifs, finely embroidered, including a grand house and garden,

dogs,

birds,

rabbits,

British crowns and coronets (King, Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Lord, Count, and Baron),

initialled left to right IG MG PO MG CG IG EH,

potted flowering plants

and 7-tail-feather peacocks

CONDITION: Good.

Some small holes.

No stains.

No stitch losses.

Colours are good with no noticeable fading.

The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
