William IV, dated 1834. 18.5ins by 15.5ins wide. 1834 Silkwork Sampler by Martha Elizabeth Henstridge. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.


Meandering floral border.

Colours black, cream, blues, light brown, dark brown, gold, pink, greens and magenta.
Verse reads
'If I am right. thy grace impart,
Still in the right to stay;
If I am wrong, oh teach my heart
To find that better way
'

Signed and dated 'Martha Elizabeth Henstridge Her Work 1834'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a fruit tree,

butterflies,


birds,



potted flowering plants,




peacocks,


dogs

and flowers.


CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of holes.


















A few stains,




and a number of specks to the top of the sampler.



Some stitch losses to the verse,



signature

and one motif.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around some of the dark green threads.



Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
