The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, green, pink, brown and blue. Verse entitled, 'BEHOLD THE MAN' reads, ' SEE, there! His temples crown'd with thorn,> His bleeding hands extended wide,> His streaming feet transfixt and torn> The fountain gushing from his side!> Tis done! The precious ransom's paid, > Receive my soul, he cries:> See where he bows his sacred head!> He bows his head, and dies!'. Signed and dated 'Sarah Evans Work Aged 11 1831'. A good set of motifs, including Jesus on the cross, moon, stars, birds, animals and trees.
