Period: George IV, dated 1826

Description:

1826 Sampler by Mary Herbert Skuse. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with glass. Stitched to paper with wood and brown paper backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours brown, cream, red, green, copper, blue and black. Verse reads, 'Blest Mary what a happy choice> And may I choose the same> To sit at Jesus sacred feet> And love is gracious name'. Signed with initials and dated, 'Mary Herbert Skuse January th 25 1826'. A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a women stood in the garden, a girl under an arbour, stars, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, blossoming trees, sheep and birds including owls.

Condition Summary:

Generally Good. Any fading, hole, stain, defect or stitch loss, when present, is not overly detracting.
