1847 Sampler by Ellen Wheatley. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, black, brown and cream. Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand> As the first effort of an infants hand> And while her fingers oer the canvass move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her share a part> And write thy name thyslef upon her heart'. Signed and dated, 'Ellen Wheatley Aged 12 Years 1847'. A good set of motifs, including a gardening scene, dogs, birds, angels, potted flowering plants, trees, laden with fruit, fir trees, crowns and hearts
