Period: William IV, dated 1832
1832 Sampler by Maria Sills. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, blue and cream. Alphabets A-Z in lower case and numbers 1-14 Verse reads, 'Restless mortals toil for nought>Bliss in vain from earth is sought>Bliss, a native of the sky>Never wanders. Mortals try>There you cannot seek in vain>For to seek her is to gain'. Inscription reads, 'Almost all difficulties are to be>overcome by perseverance'. Signed and dated, 'Maria Sills Walsham Aged 7 Years Fin'ed Sep'er 13 1832'. Walsham relates to a town in England, where the sampler was stitched. A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, dogs, hearts, leaves and flowers.
Generally Good. Any fading, hole, stain, defect or stitch loss, when present, is not overly detracting.
