1763 Sampler by Mary Ryley. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours browns, cream, pale blue, white, black, pink and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verses read 'Next unto God Dear Parents I addrefs>My self to you in humble Thankfulnefs>For all your Care and Charge on me bestow'd>And means of Learning unto me allow'd>Go on Dear Parents let me still Pursue>Those Golden Arts the Vulgar never knew' and 'The lofs of Time is much>The lofs of Truth is more>The lofs of Christ is such>That no one can restore' and 'Remember Time will come when we must give>Account to God how we on Earth do live'. Signed and dated 'Perform'd by Mary Ryley in the Year 1763'. A good set of motifs, including fruit baskets, flowers, a stag, fir trees, crowns, hearts, a lion and birds.
