Antique Sampler, 1839 by Harriott Simpson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours greens, cream, pale blue, browns and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads 'If I am right o teach my heart> still in the right to stay> If I am wrong thy grace impart> To find that better way'. Signed and dated 'Harriott Simpson Aged 9 Years February 25 1839'. A good set of motifs, some finely detailed, including two houses with a field containing sheep and deer between them, lions, dogs, birds, flowers, insects, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, squirrels, crowns, hearts, two follies flying a flag and owls.
Good. Any fading, hole, stain, defect or stitch loss that may be present, is minor and not detracting.
