The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, green, brown and blue. Verses read 'Jesus permit thy Gracious name to stand as the first Effort> of an infant hand and while her fingers over the canvas> move Engage her tender heart to seek thy love with thy> Dear children let her share a part and write thy> name thyself upon her heart' and 'Favour is Deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that feareth> the Lord she shall be praised Give her of the fruit of her hands> and let her own works praise her in the Gates' and 'My God is reconcild his pardoning voice I bear he owns>me for his child I can no longer fear with confidence I now>draw nigh and bouldly Abba father cry'. Signed and dated 'Elizabeth Anthony finsh this work in her twelveth year of her Age 1827'. A good set of motifs, including a house, two figures, wearing hats and carrying walking canes, cats in trees, birds, fruit baskets, fir trees, blossoming trees, crowns, a heart and a large spaniel type dog.
Generally good. Any fading, hole, stain, defect or stitch loss, when present, is not overly detracting.
