| Pair of Staffordshire figures with a theatrical and literary theme which feature Shakespeare and Milton, stood on a shaped base. Multi-coloured with underglaze blue version. | Shakespeare: Good. Slight rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: a few specks of kiln soot caught in the glaze to the base; flecks of stray coloured glaze to his jacket and the reverse. RESTORATION: Retouched paint losses to his trousers, shoes and hair. Milton: Good. Small flake to his nose. Slight rubbing to gilt. KILN EFFECTS: small firing pits to the reverse. RESTORATION: Remodelled left hand and quill. Retouched paint losses to hair, shoes and pillar. |
