Period: Victorian, circa 1860
Description: Staffordshire 'Mr & Mrs Caudle' figure, modeled on a gilt titled base. Mrs Caudle tells Mr Caudle off as he falls asleep. These characters by Douglas Jerrold first appeared in Punch in 1845. Bright colorful enamels. Good creamy glaze. Vent hole underneath. Similar piece illustrated figure 1031, page 282, Schiffer's 'Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding.
Condition: Good. No cracks. No hairlines. One shallow chip and a couple of flakes to foot rim. Very minor paint losses to reverse of chair. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: touch mark to Mr Caudle's left knee. Stray speck of green enamel to top of base. Repair to both necks and left arm of Mrs Caudle. Restoration of Mr Caudle's right hand. Restored chip to base and both hats.
