| Description: | 1840 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Partridge. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours dark brown, cream, copper, olive green, dark green and gold. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-20 and then 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70. Verse entitled 'TRUST IN PROVIDENCE' reads 'Almighty Father of mankind,> On thee my hopes remain> And when the day of trouble comes,> I shall not trust in vain.> In early years Thou art my guide,> And of my youth the friend,> And as my days begin with thee,> With thee my days shall end.' Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Partridge. May 1840'. A few motifs including potted flowering plants, crowns and birds. |
| Condition: | Generally Good. A number of holes. A number of patchy stains. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. |
