Description:	1820 Verse Sampler by Ann Guy. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering leafy border. Colours black, yellow, pale green, light brown, magenta, gold and white. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-24. Verse entitled 'THE DROWNING FLY' reads 'In yonder glafs behold a drowning fly> Its little feet how vainly does it ply> Poor helpless insect and will no one save> will no one snatch thee from the threatning grave> My finger top shall prove a friendly shore> There trembler all thy dangers now are oer> wipe thy wet wings and banish all thy fear> Go join thy numerous kindred in the air> Away it flies resumes its harmless play> And lightly gambols in the golden ray> smile not spectators at this humble deed> For you perhaps a nobler task's decreed> A young and sinking family to save> To raise the thoughtless from destruction's wave> To you for help the wretched lift their eyes> Oh hear for pities sake their plaintive cries> Ere long unless some guardian interpose> Oer their devoted heads the floods may close'. Signed and dated 'Ann Guy Aged 7 Years 1820'. Single potted flowering plant motif.
Condition:	Generally Good. A number of holes. A few light patchy stains. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. A piece of fluff caught under the glass. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
