| Description: | 1838 Sampler by Mary Maria Dagg. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with glass. Fixed to a wood stretcher frame with brown paper. The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering leafy border. Colours greens, cream, gold, blue and browns. Verse entitled 'THE TREE OF DISSIPATION' reads'The>sin of>drunkness>expels reason,>drowns memory,>distempers the body,>defaces beauty, dimin->ishes strength, corrupts>the blood, inflames the liver,>weakens the brain, turn men, into walking hospitals, causes in->ternal, external, and- incurable> wounds, is a witch to the senses, a>devil to the soul, a thief to the pocket,>the beggar's companion, a wife's woe, and>children's sorrow-makes man become>a beast, and a self murderer, who>drinks to others' good health,>and robs himself> of his>own:>The>root of>all evil is>DRUNKENNESS!!''Mary Maria Dagg her work Aged 10 Years 1838'. | Condition: | Good. A few holes tiny holes to the bottom right corner. A few small stain specks and one pale stain to the left side. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run around the brown threads in the lower section of the verse. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound. |
