| Description: | 1836 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Martha Hebditch. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, cream, blue, copper, gold, pink, dark green and magenta. Verse reads 'Grace is a plant, where'er it grows,> Of pure and heavenly root;> But fairest in the youngest shews,> And yields the sweetest fruit.'. Signed and dated 'Mary Ann Martha Hebditch 1836'. A few motifs including a country cottage with sheep and a cow grazing in the grounds, angels, birds, butterfly, crown, flowers and a fruit basket. |
| Condition: | Generally Good. A number of holes. Several small stains and specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Some loose threads to the grass. Family name/surname has been re-stitched at a later date. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. Some colour run around the dark green threads in the top left corner. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. |
