1822 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Rice

Period: George IV, dated 1822
Description: 1822 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Rice. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, copper, dark brown and gold. Verse reads 'For every trifle scorn to take offence> That always shows great pride or> little sense> Good nature and good sense should> ever join> To err is human to forgive divine'. Signed and dated 'Mary Rice Aged 12 Years 1822'. A few motifs including a shepherd and sheperdess with their sheep, birds, dogs and a tree.
Condition: Fair. A number of holes. Repaired tear to verse. A number of stains. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
