|
Circa 1820 silkwork sampler by Mary Ann Parsons. Framed in an exceptionally attractive, original, regency reeded ebonised frame with flowerhead corners and rippled, old glass. Loose mounted over card with brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Simple embroidered border. Colors black, green, pale blue, pale green, dark brown, gold, white, pink and cream. Verse reads
'Weep not for mee ye standers by
Which do beset me round
For in the dust I now must lay
Until the trumpet sound
My life is like the dust or clay
To which I must return
My spirit shall return to rest
The place from Whence it came
I must be gone for ever more
And leave you all behind
For noW the day of death is come
And judgment of mankind
See Christ come riding in the clouds
To judge the World a broad
Angels an saints crying a loud
Raise dead and meet the Lord'
Signed 'mary ann Parsons in her 10th yr'. A wonderful set of motifs, including two angles with stars and the sun between them, birds, potted flowering plants, fir trees, squirrels and spotted dogs
CONDITION: Good. No holes. One small stain, illustrated. No stitch losses. Colors are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No color run. Stretching is slightly uneven, not detracting. Frame showing wear and chips, and one of the flower heads is half missing, illustrated, but the frame is structurally sound.
