1800 Silkwork Sampler by Catherine McMillan

1800 Silkwork Sampler by Catherine McMillan. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours copper, blue, olive green, gold, white, black, pink, light green, magenta, light blue and dark green. Verse entitled 'ON EASTER' reads 'THE Holy Feast of Easter was injoind> To bring Christs Resurrection to our Mind> Rise then from Sin as he did from the Grave> That by his Merrits he your Souls may save.'. Verse entitled 'The Desire' reads 'From my Beginning may the Almighty Power.> Blessings bestow in never ceasing Showers> Oh! may I happy be and always blest!> Of ev'ry Joy of ev'ry Wish possess'd!> May Plenty dissipate all Worldly Care> And smiling Peace bless my revolving Years'. Verse entitled 'ADVICE' reads 'LEARN to contemn all Praise betimes,> For Flatt'ry is the Nurse of Crimes.> With early Virtue plant thy Breast,> The specious Arts of Vice detest.'. Verse entitled 'VIRTUE' reads 'Virtue's the chiefest Beauty of the Mind,> The noblest Ornament of Human_Kind:> Virtue's our Safeguard and our guiding Star> That stirs up Reason when our Senses err'. Verse entitled 'On Death.' reads 'Death at a Distance we but flightly fear.> He brings his Terrors as he draws more near:> Through Poverty, Pain, Slav'ry, we drudgon,> The worst of Beings better please than none:> No Price too dear to purchase Life and Death,> The heaviest Burthn's easier borne than Death.'. Signed and dated 'Catherine McMillan 1800'. A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a house with a garden, a dog, birds, butterflies, angels, flowers, potted flowering plants, fir trees, fruit trees and a lady and gent both standing underneath a tree. CONDITION: Good. Several small holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition.
