Awarded Antique of the Week on 09 June 2006

Pair WMF figural candlesticks

Pair WMF candlesticks, one modeled as a young male, and the other a young female, both standing on a mound surrounded by pond lily pads which form the base and four feet. Both figures have a piece of material draped around their naked bodies, and support a flower which rises up from the base behind them to form the candle holder. Impressed maker's marks to the inside of bases 'WMF' and 'B' - indicating Britannia-metal, a tin and antimony alloy, and 'OX' - Oxidised. The impressed decoration is chemically blackened and then polished to a matt finish. CONDITION: Good. No restoration. Slight wear and light scratches to both bases. The oxidised blackened finish appears to have been polished off.
